Pemberton and Hightstown: A Chronicle of Railroading through the FARM BELT of New Jersey by John Brinckmann John H. Brinckmann (1924-2004) was born and raised in Metuchen, New Jersey. As a young boy, he began riding the trolley and railroads, which sparked a lifelong fascination with them. He was editor and publisher of the Railroad Journal from 1940-1943 and began working with the Pennsylvania Railroad at the age of 18.
During World War II, he entered the United States Army and served 19 months in Alaska. At the end of the war, he returned to the PRR, where he ultimately retired in 1985 after 43 years.
Among his works were the definitive works on the Tuckerton Railroad (The Tuckerton Railroad: A Chronicle of Transport to the New Jersey Seashore, 1974) and the Pemberton and Hightstown Railroad (1987).
Brinckmann printed the first edition copies of his books by hand on a six by ten inch Kelsey Excelsior Hand Press, making these books hard to find. What they lack in accessibility is made up through their excellent information.
